EN-20
An instrument that responds to the sound environment in musical and non-musical ways.
This is a self-contained responsive listening device that takes the sonic environment and remixes it in real time.
Side story The EN-20 is the spiritual (and technical) successor to my EN-1 granular sampling synthesizer. I took the code from the EN-1 and improved it significantly, and then cut the hardware interface down to the bare minimum, resulting in an instrument with built-in microphones that responds to the sound around it in real time.
It has a single knob for adjusting a number of parameters at once. This is randomized so it will react and sound differently each time it is used. The box was custom built from local oak.
The result is an instrument that responds to the sound environment in musical and non-musical ways.
